A boy who won't stand up for himself becomes a man who can't stand up to anything.

This is a blog for our English 11 class. In this blog, you will learn the importance of being literate in the 21st century and how it differs from being literate in the 20th century. This blog will show how I am literate and what I still need to learn by talking about poetry, novels, writing, informational text, drama, and media literacy.

Informational Text

This section of my blog will show you my ability to analyze a non-fictional item and it will also teach you how to analyze a non-fictional item.

What Good Readers Do When They Read:

  1. Good readers are active readers. They are constantly making notes and analyzing what they are reading
  2. From the outset they have clear goals in mind for their reading. They constantly evaluate whether the text, and their reading of it, is meeting their goals
  3. Good readers typically look overthe text before they read noting such things as the structure of the text and text sections that might be relevant to their reading goals
  4. As they read, good readers frequently make predictions about what is to come. If your prediction is wrong it forces you to go back and question why your prediction is wrong. Maybe you misread something or misunderstood certain symbols or themes perhaps
  5. They read selectively, continually making decisions about their reading — what to read carefully, what not to read, what to re-read and scan.

Before you begin to read, make sure you have a clear goal(s) in mind and that the text will meet you goals.

E.g. My goal is to study for the DNA test using my biology textbook.

  • First, I will go to the table of contents and find the chapter in which DNA is found.

Now that I am at the table of contents, I will look for the chapter in which DNA is the sub-heading.

Now that I have found the page number, I will go to that page.

I can also go to the section review to make sure that I’ve understood what I have read and to know what the main points of the section are and know them well.
